{patterned perches}

torn between cooling down for autumn and letting summer leave us..
if missing outdoor brights and sunny hues is on your mind..
why not take the rainforest inside for sunshine all year long?

tips for mixing patterns?
  • keep walls simple {above are neutral as they get} - whites or greys would be my pick, though if you want to go bold or dark with the walls, go lighter with the patterns.
  • start with a color palette you like & that goes well together - above palette starts with red & green, which are complementary colors {opposite on the color wheel} and adds in shades of pink/coral, a few blues, and a pop of saffron yellow on the chair seat. these colors work together to achieve a balance of warm {red/pink/yellow} and cool {green/blues} color in the space. finally, the dark black stripe adds sophistication and works to ground the space and keep it from feeling too juvenile.
  • vary the scale of the patterns - i.e. tiny florals {above - the bench cushion} and tone on tones {the pink pillow} will read more as solids, allowing a larger scale pattern to take center stage {the green otomi/mexican textile on the wall}. stripes/geometrics & florals are always friendly and a bold stripe {here the back cushion} can add a modern edge and keeps the patterns from feeling too sweet.

also can't help but love the above flat files for storage + cozy daybed nook.

{grateful 365}

what a beautiful article and photo gallery i came across today in Notebook Magazine (i wish i could actually subscribe rather than having to read it online). titled 365 reasons to be grateful, a photographer, hailey bartholomew, talks about her personal project for which every day for one year, she took a single polaroid photograph of something for which she was grateful.
"it’s easy to spend our lives rushing from one thing to the next, but this allowed me to kind of press pause each day and savour those beautiful moments that would otherwise pass me by."

"i think what [this project has done] is, when i get really busy and stressed with work i forget what i have and the everyday practice of this project pulls me back to what is important – constantly – which is really good for someone like me because i get a bit driven and forget what i really want. this project just puts it all in perspective."

"when you’re looking out for good things in your life, it’s as if they stand out more. even if i don’t photograph them, they stand out now."

{april showers}

about this time yesterday the skies in savannah were looking very threatening to anyone without a wet suit, let alone without an umbrella. i was thankful to have a spare considering my usual umbrella was sitting at home, not unlike the ruffled one below.

rainy days don't have to be gloomy :: greet the april showers with one of these blossoms from the umbrella society.

{a nook for sunshine}

daylight savings has hit savannah with full force and what was lost in time and sleep was made up for in sunshine and 80 degree weather. the first spring--albeit unofficial--saturday was just begging to be spent outside in a sundress, so kl & i took a good bit of the afternoon to amble through outdoor antique/second-hand markets. when kl happened upon a steal of a wrought iron bench for her porch, in need of only a bath and a fresh coat of colorful spray paint, it got me thinking about the essentials needed to create an inviting and charming outdoor room with whatever space and budget you have (and in my case both are on the smaller side, so we'll focus on that mostly).

springtime comes easily via punchy throw pillows. add some geraniums, a potted hydrangea, and a baby palm or two and your menagerie will be blooming with color.
